The town of Braidwood, Illinois was developed during the coal mining boom from 1870 to 1910. The Braidwood coal mines peaked between 1870-1880. The town was named for James Braidwood,a civil engineer and pioneer coal mine operator. The first coal in this area was accidentally discovered in Braidwood in 1864 by William Hennebry, who was contracted by the Thomas Byron farm to drill a water well. The town was incorporated in 1873.
